Is infectious myonecrosis (IMN), the latest ravaging shrimp disease, spreading throughout Asia? While rumours are rife, according to John Fiorillo of IntraFish, there are reports it has spread from Indonesia, where it has decimated production at PT Central Proteinaprima (CP Prima), the world’s largest shrimp farm. It is now rumoured to be showing up in Vietnam, China and the Philippines. According to Fiorillo’s sources, there are still no clinically proven positive results from any country outside Brazil, where it was first detected, and Indonesia. In Indonesia, the disease is said to be still “biting hard”, with no end in sight at the moment. Any significant spread of the virus to other Asian countries could dramatically impact production and drive prices higher at a time when, at least in the US, consumers remain frugal. Wholesale shrimp prices have been on the rise since March, perhaps reflecting, in part, growing concern over IMN.
